Panther at work

« 31 October 2003 | 15:59 | geekery, macnuttery, sonystyle | No Comments »

So I got around to installing Panther on a PowerBook G4 for work. I was given a Sony SR series laptop which has all my document data, and I thought I would copy them over to the new machine (yes, all 1.6GB of it). Turns out, Panther can read NTFS partitions, but there [...]

word vs writing

Elections for your local representative are coming up in Japan, and apparently the concept of a manifesto is making waves. I find this interesting, because in Japan the written agreement isn’t perceived as having much strength. In fact, when I was packing up in California to move to Tokyo to join my current [...]

Jesper Koll and NPY

Jesper Koll of Merrill Lynch Japan is making the rounds with his editorial on Japan’s NPY problem. My question is, has this been translated into Japanese and disseminated? I’m still not convinced the “English” taught in Japanese schools will suffice to understand the article. Changing a generation is a long and tedious [...]

Cheap Dollars

« 29 October 2003 | 17:08 | Japan, biznomics | No Comments »

Wow, the yen is definitely getting stronger.
I think it’s possible for the dollar to fall to around 95 yen by the end of this year
Now, if there’s a true foundation to that claim, Santa Claus might not have enough space on his sled for all my gifts.

Maybe it’s about time I dust off the ol’ Chinese language books. At least my Chinese colleagues have kind words about my pronuciation.

Fires in California

Great entry on the current California fires by Tim Orens. My grandparents had to evacuate their self-built house because the fires came all too close; news so far is that it’s still standing, but they’ve been asked to stay away until the situation is better under control. Hopefully that will come very soon.

Payless Shoes

« 29 October 2003 | 16:04 | America, Japan, biznomics, tokyo life | No Comments »

Apparently Payless Shoes is coming to Japan. Anyone who has walked down Takeshita Street or checked out TokyoShoes has caught a glimpse of the size of the shoe market out here. Problem is, it’s really not that difficult to find cheap shoes (in both senses of the word). The market is already [...]

We … love … to party!

Last Friday was our research lab’s “recreation day” — once a year, the whole lab is invited out to a socializing event. This time around it was an evening of bowling, followed by dinner while watching a flamenco performance. Prizes were given out to high scorers and low, and somehow I managed to [...]

A/V Festa and 楽器フェア

Once again, my “service provider” went through a few admin changes, so apologies to those of you who tried posting comments; since the database backend was down, I also couldn’t post any entries. This entry is a bit overdue, but better late than never.

There is hope in Japan … or is there?

First I read this news bite about the police going after the biggest organized crime group in Japan. That’s good news in many respects; it’s evidence, along with Koizumi telling Nakasone to forget about it, that a growing number of Japanese are willing to take progressive risks in severing old, hindering ties. But [...]
