mass customization
Part 1 and Part 2 of a series on mass product customization by Jack Aaronson are good reads if you ever have to think about branding, image, and accomodating customer needs and desires. Reminds me how much fun I had customizing my own Timbuk2 bag almost 5 years ago. Incidentally, they’ve now got Graphic Messenger Bags, with a stock selection of images to choose from. Pretty soon you’ll be able to upload your own. In fact, there’s a designer-bag maker that allows you to bring in a photo or image and have it imprinted on the canvas. I’ve forgotten the name, but unfortunately they request 6 months advance notice. So much for service.
