Gien in Japan
Gien is opening in Tokyo. This is an interesting move. Smart? I don’t think so. Their target may be the aging population, but with a screwed up pension plan and high-costs of service in Japan, only few will have such expendable cash towards luxury tableware. Plus, only few can afford to host house parties, let alone private dinners, and the younger crowds that do go the plastic-cup route. The vibrant restaurant and nightlife may be the biggest customers, but how many fancy Italian diners are going to use French tableware? This is just another luxury line dazzled and bit by the success of the luxury clothing bug.
