Cow Parade Tokyo

« 28 September 2003 | 0:43 | design, tokyo life | No Comments »

Took a stroll this afternoon with Gen and his friend after scoring some nice items at the annual(?) Addidas Family Sale. We hit the Cow Parade around the Marunouchi district. Seems the cows have visited other areas as well, with more trips planned. Didn’t get a chance to see them all, but [...]

A wonderful office

Joel Spolsky has an interesting writeup of his company’s new office. Some interesting architectural design choices with otherwise underappreciated decisions for the programmer in mind. During my internships at U.S. companies, I always had a private desk, and it definitely made for productive output. Now I’m starting to think the Japanese communal [...]

Can Music and Movies learn from Fashion?

I love this perspective of how the more entertainment-oriented industries just might be able to learn something from the fashion industry. Thanks Steve.

Hey Sony, Ask David Rockwell

Fast Company held their RealTime Conference a few months ago, and now they’ve got transcripts from some of the speaker sessions up. I say Sony should work with David Rockwell after having read his speech. It’s a bit incohesive, but I like his key points.

The VR Challenge

Tim Oren’s blog had an interesting tidbit on Virtual Reality guru Jaron Lanier. I remember well the hype surrounding the CAVE at my alma mater, with some interesting applications including this one (PDF) by uber-geek classmate and friend Matt Ahrens. Scott Fisher has some interesting current work going on, but as Jaron points [...]

Verdana, a Nirvana for the eyes

Gen posted a link with a nice long list of bloggers over at Microsoft. Thanks to Safari’s tabbing feature, I managed to scan every blog rather efficiently[1]. It was apparent that many were working on web-services and web-related protocols (particularly XML). One that particularly caught my eye was Brian Keller’s blog, with [...]

Photography a growing problem?

It seems the proliferation of image-capture devices of all kinds is starting to really piss people off. I snapped a photo of this ad while on the Yamanote JR line this past weekend; I was in a bit of a hurry so the text is unreadable, but it essentially says “Taking a photo of [...]

Out of time

Ran out of time while dying my hair today at my favorite hair stylist in Aoyama. There’s no way I could have kept the parting-line so straight if I had done it myself. Hopefully it’s festive enough for Fuji Rock next weekend. I wonder how my lab president will react when I [...]

Festive Landfill

About 10 years ago, just about when I left Japan to be infused with a truly American education, Odaiba was beginning its transformation from dump/landfill to shopping center and entertainment complex(es). I finally made my rounds through this consumer paradise, albeit on a rainy day. At least the crowds stayed away! I [...]

Shrinking DTM Landscape

Now this is interesting — the number of independent software-based mixing studio companies seems to be shrinking pretty fast, the latest being Adobe acquiring Syntrillium (makers of Cool Edit Pro). In the past year we’ve also seen Sony Pictures Digital acquire Sonic Foundry, and the well publicized Apple Computer purchase of Emagic.
