Well okay, my experiences last week weren’t nearly as bad as the following, but it seems the xenophobic trouble that’s brewin’ isn’t just localized to Japan: Martin Varsavsky of Fon reports two American students were attacked by skinheads in Madrid. Could this have anything to do with Bush’s international politics and “leadership”?
Two days ago: I get up from my train seat motioning to get off and the man standing in front of me, grasping a dangling handle, won’t budge. I duck under his arm and swing around to his right, but the door is to his left so now I must walk behind him. It’s a [...]
First post for 2007 – Happy New Year everyone! I’ve put this year’s 年賀状 (nenga-jou) online just for my dear visitors.
People of the web in Tokyo, listen up! BarCamp is coming to town! And it looks like the “large software company” might be IBM. So mark your calendars – January 27th, 2007. Looks to be a good fusion – and then some – of Pechakucha and Mobile Monday. Who knows, maybe yours truly will have [...]
Inspired was I, one night in San Fran
while visiting family and friends,
to create a website for those in Japan,
that was fun and followed pop trends.
I whipped up the spec as oDesk requests,
and posted one night to hire.
Next mornin’ I woke, and to my delight,
The response put my Inbox on fire!
Coders from Russia, India, China,
even a [...]
If you’ve been to Japan in the past few years you’ve undoubtedly noticed the uptick in building construction. From architectural marvels such as Herzog and Demuron’s Prada building to the Mori group’s campus-size Roppongi and Omotesando Hills to even an onsen in the middle of Roppongi, new buildings and establishments continue to pop up like [...]
I finally got around to porting over most of the media files from the ol’ server, and had almost forgotten one of the best mash-up albums of all time – PopChop! My PopChop page (link also in the sidebar) now includes a flash-player for you lazy bums so you can listen to each tune [...]
Google Labs just updated their RSS reader, Google Reader. I know some people swear by other popular readers, notably NetNewsWire, but none that I’ve found had a good mix of web-accesibility, usability, and blog-integration (i.e. like the badge/widget in my sidebar). This new UI is quite nice – you should check it out!
I’m finding it remarkable that almost nobody in Silicon Valley followed the Mixi IPO, let alone knew who or what Mixi is. Here’s an SNS at $2B that makes MySpace look like it sold too early and Facebook actually seem reasonable. Okay, so Japan may be in its own little internet bubble, but as [...]
The Tuesday, September 25th US edition of the WSJ has an article on one of the most successful academic-institution chancellors – the one and only E. Gordon Gee, who once presided as Brown University’s chancellor for a mere two years and miraculously burned through $3 million fixing up the president’s mansion before being whisked away [...]
