Smoking linked to Miscarriages?

« 12 February 2004 | 12:18 | Japan, diary, law, politics, salaryman | No Comments »

Smoking is being linked to miscarriages. This doesn’t bode very well for Japan’s birthrate, given some 30+% of females smoke. I’m sure secondhand smoking is linked in some way too, so even if the woman stopped, the rediculously high smoking male percentage won’t help much either. Unfortunately these reports aren’t circulated enough [...]

Typical Thursday Night

Had a late night out with the “big guns” in my work area — one lowly 24 year old with 3 others in their late 30s early 40s…makes for an interesting environment. We segued into the dinner from a late meeting, so we didn’t adjourn for the train home until about 11pm. Needing [...]

Romantic Dining…

« 4 February 2004 | 0:55 | Japan, food, salaryman, the sexes, tokyo life | 1 Comment »

After a few solicitations for romantic dining spots (gee, I wonder why…), I’ve decided to share my secret list. What the hell, it’s not like I’ll need it anytime soon anyways.
In no particular order. Some places are pricey, so proceed with caution. Your and my definition of “romantic” may vary, but suffice [...]

Gien in Japan

Gien is opening in Tokyo. This is an interesting move. Smart? I don’t think so. Their target may be the aging population, but with a screwed up pension plan and high-costs of service in Japan, only few will have such expendable cash towards luxury tableware. Plus, only few can afford [...]

Annoying your own citizens

Thoughts on an observation of sorts during a slow afternoon.

NHK’s Project X

Some of you may have heard about NHK’s Project X TV show. I’ve only watched one episode I think I mentioned a while back — about “Tron”, the operating system even more widely used than Microsoft’s Windows line. In fact, apparently the U.S. gov’t blocked it from entering its borders for fear of [...]

a new “male industry”?

Hmmm…interesting “role reversals”. Unfortunately, taking pictures is all the girls will do. Do they have the forwardness to ask for more?

credit, the Western way

Idei’s plans to gradually ‘westernize’ Sony are starting to solidify.
Sony currently assigns seven grades that are closely linked to employees’ years of service. It takes an average university graduate about 10 years to attain the highest grade. Under the new system, it is possible for a capable worker to achieve the top grade in a [...]

Move over, Sony

AP on Sony. Remember Zenith? RCA? Who else was there…
