Elections for your local representative are coming up in Japan, and apparently the concept of a manifesto is making waves. I find this interesting, because in Japan the written agreement isn’t perceived as having much strength. In fact, when I was packing up in California to move to Tokyo to join my current [...]

We … love … to party!

Last Friday was our research lab’s “recreation day” — once a year, the whole lab is invited out to a socializing event. This time around it was an evening of bowling, followed by dinner while watching a flamenco performance. Prizes were given out to high scorers and low, and somehow I managed to [...]

The Sony Cybershot team has finally produced something for the general consumer market that is sure to compete with Casio’s Exilim line — the Cybershot DSC-T1. At 5.1 megapixels, 2.5″ LCD screen, 3x optical zoom and only slightly larger than the Exilim S3, this will be my next bonus present :)
More details (in English) [...]

Glocom has a great opinion essay by Haruo Shimada (Professor, Keio University) on how reforming the housing market is a key component to Japan’s economic recovery. One fantastic point in particular:
The fact is that a house is not an asset with durable value in Japan, and this is the real cause of the slow [...]

So my buddy Brian also works within Sony, and has been keeping a rather detailed diary of his exploits both within the company and in Japan in general. Makes for interesting reading, but here’s one entry that caught my eye (dated 10/1):
Breaking a rule I had set for myself at the beginning, I began [...]

Dude, first post on one of the largest earthquakes I’ve sat through in a LONG time; when the earth below you starts moving vertically, you know you’re in serious trouble. Now to brace for aftershocks…

Sony to begin ‘Cell’ chip manufacturing in 2005
In typical Gen fashion, “no comment”.
Except to point out this perspective.

Short blogging hiatus due to a server move; things should be up and running now though. What I missed posting about:
William Gurley writes about a “digital hand” in reference to Adam Smith’s “invisible hand”. This has been an incredible nuisance challenge for Sony, but I think if Apple is any proof, a strong [...]
