iTunes Music Store Japan

« 8 August 2005 | 15:09 | diary, media, music, sonystyle | No Comments »

So iTunes Music Store finally hits Japan, and already in 4 days burps out 1 millions tunes. 4 days. And it’s a burp, given the over 500 million songs iTMS has sold globally. 1 millions tunes in 4 days, and that’s without one of the largest record labels’ library – Sony Music [...]

Opening up

Other people will do cool things if you let them. Books will be published, and tutorials will get written. The internet has turned customers into contributers and producers.
As umair points out
like it or not, we now live in a world where plasticity drives value. Grey markets arbitrage digital media property rights away with [...]

The difference over time

From a post on slashdot concerning “geeks” earning respect:
I’ve noticed one big difference. When a geek asks me what I do, I’ve been able to give the same answer since 1998: “I work full time for a company maintaining their sites with ASP and SQL Server.” Here’s a chronology of the responses:
1998: “What’s ASP?”
1999: “ASP [...]

Analog sharing

Placeholder for something Sony needs to think, if not at least realize, about where the economy, business, and consumer culture is going thanks to the ubiquity of the internet because we all know even the profitable and headline-making division of our business doesn’t have a Strategy for online ContEnt distribution.

この企業の男と「結婚したい」!?

« 12 March 2005 | 2:20 | Japan, diary, sonystyle, the sexes | 2 Comments »

Beatallica

Register is reporting Sony trying to stop Beatallica. Sad. Their creations definitely top my list of mashups. These are the real deal; not just splicing together tracks with some EQ’ing and a beat-matcher – this is true parody composition and performance. Amazing stuff.
So, what does one do if in such disagreement [...]

Compression vs Quality

« 30 September 2004 | 16:40 | geekery, media, music, scitech, sonystyle | No Comments »

Recent email exchange I thought I’d share:
We’re just debating the sound quality of the new Network Walkman vs. a regular MP3 Player. (We haven’t actually listened to the Network Walkman yet. [X]’s ordered one and I’m debating whether or not to get one.) [X] wants to store all of Bach’s works on his and I [...]

Rob Glaser Interview

« 15 September 2004 | 16:57 | media, music, sonystyle | No Comments »

Rob Glaser answers ten questions about Real Networks, Real Player, Harmony, etc.
It’s sad. I’m sad. No matter how as-yet-unsuccessful an unmentioned company is, I would rather have had it mentioned in a scathing light than not at all. We’re not even on the map.

Information Force Multiplier

Jeff Nolan makes a great point about blogging in “tree-oriented cultures.” Hey Mr. CEO, how serious are you about getting to the core of the information? Reminds me of a favorite:
In the beginning was the Plan.
And then came the Assumptions.
And the Assumptions were without form.
And the Plan was without substance. And darkness was [...]

リフレッシュタイ !

Every day at exactly 15:00, a five-minute exercise (mostly stretches) chimes through the company-wide PA system in a female voice over soothing background music. Of course, hardly anyone bothers to pay attention. It’s just another remnant of the “old days” – like the rubber date-stamps that need manual tweezer-changing. Anyways, having a [...]
