Dressing up the Japanese Man

« 20 October 2004 | 2:30 | Japan, the sexes, tokyo life | No Comments »

I had dinner at Spago’s this past Sunday. It was a pseudo-reunion dinner with long-time family friends who were making their annual visit to Japan. With Spago’s being the world-class restaurant it is, I pulled out most of the stops and went slick-black with my favorite cashmere jacket. All six of us [...]

Japan’s “Foreigner Issue”

« 6 October 2004 | 13:30 | Japan, diary, politics, tokyo life | No Comments »

Some interesting stats by the BBC on Japan’s “diversity”, which is, frankly, laughable. But it will have to change, if Japan hopes to have any credibility on a globally influential scale.

Nothing entirely new, but a few more stats. Japan’s women wary to wed. Where’re the ones with an English Mastiff?

I knew a resource like it had to exist. The Tokyo Vegetarian Guide. Right on.

Foreign Workers

« 31 August 2004 | 12:19 | Japan, biznomics, tokyo life, worklife | No Comments »

Lots of money flowing back in little paper envelopes by foreign workers helping the Japanese economy. I’ve noticed an interested trend concerning the increase of non-Japanese in the service sector – many convenience stores in the less crowded parts of town seem to employ more non-Japanese Asians (who, btw, speak very good Japanese – [...]

Terrie’s Take ML went out today – the website doesn’t seem to get updated; anyone know what’s up? Some good info regarding the economy from this month’s distro though. In particular:
Certainly a lot of other people are taking heart and putting their money where their hopes lie. It interesting to learn that almost 15,000 [...]

Birthrates

« 6 August 2004 | 12:33 | Japan, tokyo life | No Comments »

Interesting explanation and commentary on what Japan should be thinking about as it tries to resolve its declining birthrate problem. I had heard stories of the government offering “baby bonuses” in the range of 300,000yen for every child after the 2nd or so…anyone know if this is true?

Accomplishments

Had a long day today – first a bunch of interviews, then a driving test (which I’ll post about later). Came back to the office, and followed a chain of links eventually inspiring this post. Here goes:
Strategize editor Ross’ comment on my previous post — Bizwerk’s I love getting shit done — a [...]

Tokyo the Expensive

« 14 June 2004 | 11:56 | Japan, tokyo life, worklife | No Comments »

The fact that Tokyo is once again the most expensive city in the world for foreigners (as was the focus of the study) does not bode well for increasing the diversity of the population. It would be interesting to see a comparison of standard necessities between native vs. foreigner costs, such as Docomo’s [...]
