More than 300 fires have started in Victoria in the past two days, with a major blaze in Moyston in the state’s west still burning out of control. (Supplied: Klaus Mayer, Pomonal CFA)A cool change, with strong winds and lightning is moving across Victoria, as firefighters tackle a series of new fires breaking out in the west of the state and south west of Melbourne, near a number of homes.Fire officials have stopped the spread of a bushfire that was threatening homes at Hastings, Bittern and Crib Point. An emergency warning issued earlier has now been downgraded to an advice. However the wind change pushed the fire towards houses south of Reid Parade and there has been some damage.A relief centre has been set up at the Graham Myers Reserve.Emergency Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley said he was always confident fire crews would get the blaze under control.”We’ve got 25 fire trucks down there, two helicopters, so they’ll get on top of it but it’s difficult,” he said.”It’s moving around in a parkland. It’s not something that will run forever, but it’s difficult to catch and it’s certainly causing a lot of concern to the neighbouring residents, which there’s a lot of them.”In western Victoria, earlier watch and act messages were downgraded to advice level late Saturday night. They included one for Cherrypool, Brimpaen and Telangatuk East, where fire is burning south of the Black Range State Park.An alert for Dimboola, Wail, Pimpino and Duchembegarra, where a bushfire is burning in the Little Desert National Park was also downgraded to advice level. The watch and act alert for the towns of Moyston, Rocky Point, Willaura North, Maroona, and Langi Logan, were also downgraded.Firefighters have stopped the spread of the Moyston fire and rain has helped ease conditions. The fire, one of more than 300 that have started in the state over the past two days, has claimed one house and destroyed around 5,000 hectares.Live: SA faces ‘incredibly dangerous’ bushfire burns NE of Adelaide; crews battle blazes in VictoriaAbout 150 firefighters are working to control the blaze with the help of water bombing aircraft. The extreme heat has eased with temperatures dropping to 27C in Horsham, 26C in Stawell in the Wimmera and 27C in Port Fairy, in the state’s south west, by 4:00pm.Storms brought down tree branches in Horsham after the temperature dropped more than 20 degrees in one hour.Mr Lapsley said the stormy weather would help firefighters if heavy rain followed lightning strikes.”We’ve got the formula of hot day, windy day, wind change, lightning behind the lightning needs to be some moisture or showers,” Mr Lapsley.”If that all goes right hopefully as the change goes through things cool down and are suppressed by showers in behind it, which is a good thing.”I just hope the showers are deep enough to put out fires of any of those that might start.
